Salt shrinking is virtually unknown in the western world, but has evolved over the centuries within Japan as a technique to finish silk crepe. To create the "Bubble Wrap" scarf, NUNO hand-silkscreens a resist onto a silk base, which is then immersed in a saltwater solution. Only the exposed areas shrink, leaving a three-dimensional surface that mimics the familiar packing material.
